Types of yoga mats: Advantages and disadvantages
Updated: Sep 17, 2024
To ensure comfortable yoga practice, it’s crucial to choose the right mat. The quality of the mat affects the comfort during your sessions. Yoga mats can be made from various materials, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The modern market offers a pleasing variety of options.

Classification of yoga mats by purpose
There are several types of mats, distinguished by their purpose. Among the main options, you can find:
Studio mats, which need to handle intensive use and have an increased level of stability. Models made from PVC are a good option. The advantages include durability, while the drawback is that they do not absorb moisture. Therefore, during use, the mat can become slippery when sweat drips on it.
Eco-friendly mats made from natural rubber. Their advantages include comfort and excellent grip. The mat absorbs moisture, so it won’t slip even during intense workouts. Other benefits include durability and strength. However, the downside is that they can be relatively expensive.
Foldable mats. These are an optimal choice for active individuals and frequent travelers. You can easily take a foldable mat with you for yoga practice on the go. The advantages include lightweight and compact size. However, a drawback is that you might not be able to practice on every surface.
Starter mats. These are designed for beginners. They are often made from TPE and are lightweight but not very durable.

What materials can they be made from?
Yoga mats can be classified by their material of manufacture. Each has its own features, advantages, and disadvantages. The main options include:
EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate), which is the least expensive material. The advantages include its lightweight and softness. However, it has several drawbacks, such as a slippery surface, quick wear, and a synthetic surface (like foam).
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is considered the most common material. Its advantages include resistance to wear and tear. The drawbacks are low anti-slip properties, especially during intense sessions, and its environmental impact.
TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) is a more professional material than EVA or PVC and has been around relatively recently. The material offers improved anti-slip properties but wears out faster compared to professional mats made of rubber.
Rubber is a natural material that is safe for people and the environment, and it does not cause allergic reactions. A drawback is its considerable weight.
Foam rubber is characterized by hypoallergenic and antibacterial properties, compactness, lightness, and durability. A drawback is its specific smell, which gradually fades over time.
Polyurethane is considered the most expensive material. It provides excellent grip, is known for its durability and strength, but has a considerable weight.
